On the Road Again . . .

I love to travel. I keep my passport close in case a handsome billionaire sweeps me onto his private jet for a romantic rendezvous. (It happens often in my dreams, perhaps they are prophetic!  At least one can hope.)

As a result of this nomadic love I have for new scenery I am ever ready to be a traveling companion for my friends and family.

Tomorrow I leave for a few days in beautiful Canada with two of my favorite authors (and friends).

Hannah Howell the creator of luscious Highlanders. http://www.amazon.com/Hannah-Howell/e/B001HN35I8/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1

And J.M. Griffin author of cozy mysteries. http://www.amazon.com/J.M.-Griffin/e/B0074JH1HU/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1

I may be out of touch for a few days, longer if I run into an exciting man. He doesn't have to be a billionaire, but he does have to have a functioning . . . brain.

See you later, alligators . . .

Okay, I admit it. I have already fallen behind in my NaNo goals. (My birthday and other work commitments should not be allowed to get in the way!)

However, today I met with my Crazy Crew for lunch and author J. M. Griffin surprised me with a notebook/calendar from NaNo. JM is also participating in the challenge.

She has recharged my enthusiasm and challenged me to catch up with her.

Writing can be a very lonely occupation. Sure we have our characters, but I write romance and my characters seem to be more involved with each other than they are with me.

It is nice to have a writing friend to push and challenge.

Thank you, JM.

My friends, we all have stumbling blocks in our lives, but if you persevere you can get real close to achieving any goal you set for yourself!

Cozy Conversations

Welcome back to the Spellroom, my friends. We have a visitor that will entice you with her cozy way around a mystery. So sit back with a nice cup of tea, or coffee if you prefer, and allow me to introduce you to J. M. Griffin. She also brought along her favorite Empanada Dough Recipe to share. So we are in for some yummy treats.

Thank you for being here today, JM.

JM: Thank you for inviting me into the Spellroom, Liberty.

Liberty: When did you start writing?

JM: I began writing about 10 years ago. I wrote romantic suspense but was rotten where the romance thing came in. I then started writing cozy mysteries and realized that’s where I belonged. It’s been onward and upward ever since. I adore cozy mystery novels (and most mysteries in general except the gory ones). Agatha Christie is a fave of mine and as a kid, I read every Nancy Drew mystery I could get my hands on.

Liberty: Great choices. I love Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden. You are very prolific. How long does it take you to write a book?

JM: How long does it take ME to write a book? Well, that depends, really. If I stay at it, I can knock out a story in about two months, if I pay attention, that is. If I get sidetracked (which usually happens), then it can be anywhere from 6 months to a year. Life often gets in the way of creativity, and that’s all there is to it.

Liberty:  Who are some of your favorite authors to read, and why?

JM:  Favorite authors? Let’s see, I enjoy Karen Marie Moning, Karen Frisch, Maeve Christopher, Liberty Blake (oh, that would be you, huh?), and Janet Evanovich. When I want a belly laugh, I read Janet E., Karen Marie Moning has a great set of Mackayla Lane novels that I’ve read about 3 times (and find I’ve missed something each time);Karen Frisch has the most interesting way of presenting life in early Boston and historic England, that I find she’s a pleasure to read. Liberty…well, when I want hot, I go directly there and then to Maeve. Maeve’s family saga is a tremendous set of stories that are tough, warm, funny, and dangerous.

Liberty: Wow! I am honored to be included in that list. Thank you.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

JM: When I’m not writing, I try to get some gardening done. The flower beds are frightful at the moment. Then there’s my art studio which is in need of a visit, too. Painting and illustrating are two of my favorites, so it’s safe to say I’m creatively insane.

Liberty: I've seen some of your art work. You have a wonderful sense of whimsy. You are enormously talented.

JM: Thank you.

Liberty: Who is your favorite athlete, and why?

JM: I don’t have a favorite athlete in the game sense of the word, such as football, hockey or such. I do have a favorite race car driver, though. As an avid Nascar fan, driver Tony Stewart tops my list followed by Denny Hamlin. Why? You ask? Because I love fast cars and daring drivers. Nascar has both of those.

Liberty: Tell us a little bit about your main characters and what makes them so special?

JM: My main character in the newest novel of the Sarah McDougall series, is Sarah. She’s an illustrator with unwanted psychic ability and a new found ability that she calls ghost-walking. She realizes she’s not just visualizing what happens, but is there as a vision. She has inherited ghost-walking from her Scottish grandmother, which comes as a total surprise. What makes Sarah so special is her ability to read a situation, makes sense of it before others do and take from it what she must in order to solve the mystery.

Raven DeVille, her handsome swashbuckling look-like a pirate neighbor, is an insurance fraud detective. He’s a no-nonsense kind of guy who is mystified by Sarah and in love with her at the same time. When his aunt goes missing, he is at his wits end and requests Sarah’s help to find her. They get up to no good, discover who is a real pirate and who the kidnappers are. The Cadence Caper is an easy, fun read that takes place in Sarasota, on Florida’s west coast.

Liberty: If you could cast the movie of your book, who would you want to play the hero and heroine?

JM: Casting the book for a movie is every author’s dream. Raven would be played by Clive Owen or Jon Hamm (from Mad Men). Sandra Bullock would be my choice for the actress who’d play Sarah’s character. Sandra can pull off the most hilarious scenes and make them look easy.

Liberty: I hope you have a blurb for us from your latest release.

JM: Yes, I did. This is for The Cadence Caper.

Blurb:
Life had been quiet for Sarah McDougall. That is, until she envisions an elderly woman’s abduction. Confused over the unwelcome and distressing images of a woman she’s never met, Sarah soon gets a plea for help from her friend and lover, Raven DeVille. His aunt has been kidnapped by treasure hunters. When there’s no ransom demand for the return of Raven’s aunt, Sarah experiences more psychic episodes where she sees and is seen while she ghost-walks into danger. Things take a sudden and unexpected turn for the worse as Sarah struggles to get the hang of ghost-walking and all it entails. She could end up trapped by her own abilities if she’s not careful, and Raven can’t help her should that happen. In her own way and with her strength of character and will, Sarah takes on the deadliest group she’s yet to meet while trying desperately to save Raven’s aunt.

Liberty: The Cadence Caper sounds wonderful. I can't wait to read it. I adored Sarah McDougall in Murder on Spyglass Lane.  Now for the recipe . . .

Empanada Dough Recipe
Prep Time: 15 minutes        Cook Time: 1 hour    Total Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Ingredients:
·         3 cups flour (plus a little more for kneading)
·         1 teaspoon salt
·         1/2 cup cold water
·         1 egg
·         1 egg white
·         1 teaspoon vinegar
·         3 tablespoons shortening
Preparation:
1. In a bowl, beat the water, egg, egg white and vinegar together. Set aside.
2. In a separate bowl, mix together the 3 cups of flour and salt.
3. Cut the shortening into the flour mix with a pastry blender or two butter knives. Make a well in the center of the flour mix and pour the liquid ingredients from the first bowl into the center.
4. Mix the wet and dry ingredients with a fork until it becomes stiff.
5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it just until all the flour is incorporated and the dough is smooth.
6. Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to rest.
7. Roll dough flat and cut pie shaped circles. Fill ½ of circle with cooked meats or cold cuts, fold empty half over filling, pinch edges together and bake.
Large Pies:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray baking sheet with cooking spray. Also spray each pie. Bake for about 25 minutes, until center is hot. Pies will turn a light golden brown.
Mini Pies:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare and bake as above, for 20-25 minutes.
Tip: If you want to keep the dough longer than 24 hours, you can freeze it.
Servings: Makes approximately 10 six-inch empanadas.
MMM, Yummy!

Liberty: Thank you for visiting with us, JM. I hope you will come back again soon.

Guest Blogger: Mystery writer JM Griffin

I'd like to welcome JM Griffin to the Spell Room today. JM has a wonderful murder mystery set in balmy Florida. Thank you for joining us today.

It’s my pleasure to be here with Liberty today. Thanks for asking me to stop by.

Last year at this time, I was skeptical about my success as an author of mystery novels and non-fiction. When the New Year rounded the corner, I figured I had nothing to lose by throwing caution to the wind and asking the universe for a direction before I began zooming along that “mountain road of life”. Frankly, things have progressed better than I had anticipated. Book sales have been good in both fiction and non-fiction. Though the non-fiction has been greater, I’m holding my own in the fiction area.
If we worry too much about all that can go wrong, we become stuck in the quagmire of “self-doubt”. That is a scary thing! It takes us to down to depths we never imagined, like drowning in the ocean. It’s hard to be brave, daring, and confident, yet I can’t think of any other way to be where creating is concerned.
With Christmas in my face (and on my hips), I sat in my office chair and went crazy on the computer. Many of my friends call me the Ever-ready bunny, but I enjoy speeding along the mountain road of life, taking every opportunity to get closer and closer to the cliff edge without actually flying over it. Why? Life is too short to be too cautious. If I don’t gamble on my future, then who will?
While my nimble fingers flew over the keys and my energy level soared (I blamed the fudge for that), I uploaded my latest novel Murder on Spyglass Lane onto Smashwords, Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and Amazon Kindle. The Amazon thing hasn’t gone as smoothly as I liked, but I’m working on it.
I had procrastinated in uploading the ebook, aware that I was out of my comfort zone with those instructions. Never being one to be fearful for too long, I simply said “J.M., get hold of yourself and just get this done”. Yeah, like all authors, I do talk to myself. My family and friends are used to it. Strangers? Well…that’s a story for another day.
This new book takes place in Sarasota, Florida. A town loaded with creative people. It is a place I enjoy going to and have spent quite a lot of time there. When I drove through Bradenton, the next town over, I saw a street sign that said “Spy Glass Lane”. The story hit me instantly and I couldn’t shake it. The more I thought about it, the bigger the story grew until it finally came together. It took three years to get the book finished, lots of other things interfered, but my writing buddies kept asking when the book was going to be done. That alone was enough to prompt me to keep going. Here is an excerpt for you and you can download a brief read on Smashwords.

Eerie owl hoots echoed across the thirteenth green. A full harvest moon spilled its golden
glow across the golf course. I walked Sparky on our nightly stroll along the cart path. We were
near Spyglass Lane, the cul-de-sac, where I lived. My house loomed in the shadows a short
distance away.
I was new to the neighborhood, and my unsettled state of mind left me wondering if the
move was the right one.
Frequent stops were the order of the late evening as Sparky, my pudgy Bassett Hound,
investigated everything he came across. I glanced to the right when something caught my eye.
Sparky turned in the same direction and waited. I could have sworn a shadowy figure dodged
behind a cluster of trees. Was it my imagination or a trick of light and dark?
The eerie hooting continued and spooked me. With a light tug on the leash, Sparky turned
from the shadows and scooted across the crunchy Florida grass, pulling me off the cart path and
along the side of my house, to the front door. I was more than anxious to get inside. My heart
thudded against my ribcage.
Pale, creepy images crept into my mind, blurring my vision. Sensations spun in my head.
Not again. Knowing what was to come; I sagged against the wall of the portico and tried to brush
aside the unwelcome imagery. I angled further into the stucco entryway ‘til the front door was
before me. I unlocked it with moist, shaky hands, sensations niggling at me again.
I slumped to my knees, aware a car swept into the driveway across the street.
A car door slammed and distant footsteps pounded toward me. I made an effort to thrust the
feelings away. Sweat prickled my skin as ghostly forms swam before my eyes. I used the bottom
of my T-shirt to wipe my face until my vision cleared. I struggled to breathe normally.
A rich, masculine voice echoed through my consciousness. “Are you all right?”
Sucking in deep breaths, I pushed myself off the ground and stood on wobbly legs. Before
me was a man, who in any other circumstance, would have set my pulse racing. But since it was
already in race mode, I couldn‘t credit him with that. His dark gaze and lazy slouch reminded me
of a pirate holding his balance on the deck of a sloop. My mind wandered.
“Yes, I‘m fine... thanks. I-I stumbled, trying to get the dog unleashed. Good Lord, that’s
pretty lame. But I can’t tell him I have visions. Nobody else can know. Not ever.
Overhead lights illuminated the small portico. I watched his eyes narrow as he took in my
appearance from head to toe. True enough, I didn‘t look like I‘d just stepped from Elle
Magazine, but it was late. I was tired and, as an artist, I generally dress in whatever comes to
hand.
“If you‘re sure everything is—―”
“I‘m fine, really”
My heart thumped hard in my chest for fear he‘d see more than I wanted him to. I turned
toward the door and opened it for Sparky. With a glance over my shoulder, and a half smile, I
murmured goodnight to the handsome devil that didn‘t appear to believe me, and closed the
door, locking it behind me.
I knew that look so well.
