Summertime Memories
With the passing of summer I found myself reflecting on the summers of my youth.
When I was nine my family moved from the city of my birth to a neighboring one. Both cities were in the suburbs.
The city of my birth was largely white collar, upper middle class, with large playgrounds, beautiful green spaces, tennis courts, statues, a small lake for swimming, and lots of tree shaded streets.
The new city had factories, the only playgrounds were attached to the schools, and were utilitarian, with very little equipment, and no trees.
I missed my old playground with its abundance of swings and tall slides, so one day I convinced the girl across the street to join me on a bike ride to my old neighborhood.
We packed a picnic and headed out. Our little legs pumped up and down hills and through traffic. We had to stop often and sit on rock walls to drink our water. (Back in those days we didn't have cool, unbreakable bottles, we had to use thermoses that still held the old milk smell in them from our school lunches. Back then primary schools didn't have cafeterias. You ate your lunch out of a cool lunch box if you were one of the lucky ones, or old scrunched up brown bags if you weren't.)
We rode for hours (most of it uphill) and never made it to the park. Donna really wanted to go home, so we headed back.
We both got into trouble that day for being gone so long, and Donna wouldn't make the trip with me again.
But I did make it there before the summer was over. I spent a lot of the summer being punished, but I made it to my park with the brook flowing through it, and the swings that brought me close to the tree tops.
I never gave up until I had reached my goal.
That is the way I have always lived my life. Some goals are easy to achieve, you can complete whatever task it is in a matter of hours. You do it today, and unless it is childbirth, you forget about the journey in a week or two.
Some goals may make you start over and over again. Your muscles might ache from the strain, your lungs burn from the pressure. People may call you foolish and try to dissuade you, but if the goal is really, really important to you, you never give up, no matter what the obstacles, no matter how long it takes.
It doesn't matter if no one else believes in you as long as you believe in yourself.
If you don't believe in yourself, you will never succeed, even if you have thousands of people who do believe in you and are cheering you on from the sidelines. If you don't believe you will never be able to get off the ground
So hang in there and believe. Then spread your wings and fly.

The Leprechaun
Today I launched a new website http://imawit2015.wix.com/liberty-blake-#!books/cnec. Stop by and see it when you get a chance.
Anyway, the Leprechaun stopped by while I was putting it together and said that it was time to give away some green in honor of Saint Paddy's day. So I am giving away a nice fresh $10 bill, United States currency.
So instead of using the time honored method of throwing the names in the hat and have one of the little guys pull out the winner, I am trying out rafflecopter. Please forgive me if I don't get everything right. I'm kind of a trial and error kind of girl sometimes.
a Rafflecopter giveaway
Take it for a test flight and let me know how it works for you. And please pass on the news of the contest. I'm planning several for the spring and I would really like a big turn out.

Penny Watson
Today I am pleased to welcome Penny Watson to the Spell Room. Penny, in your honor we are having our beverages in mustache cups. I know how you love hairy men.
Thank you for visiting the Spell Room, Penny. It's been fun.
Penny is graciously giving away a copy of her new book Lumberjack In Love. A wonderful book which will lift your spirits on a gray day and make you laugh. Just tell us who has the best beard you have ever seen. The contest is open until October 15th.
Penny
Watson is an author of quirky fiction, reviewer of romance novels, and lover of
dachshunds, plants, and beards. (Not necessarily in that order).
She
lives outside of Boston with one fly-fishing crazed husband, two lively
Filipino kids, and a wiener dog.
1. You wear many different hats, which one is your favorite?
I do wear a lot of different hats. Visors. Babushkas. A winter hat that makes me look like Adrian from the original Rocky movie. And of course my gorgeous tiara.
As far as my professional hats, I love them all! Writing my stories is a kick, reviewing novels is fun, and I love chatting about promotion and social media to writers’ groups. It’s all good!
2. A little Bulldog told me you like hairy men. How long have you had this obsession and how did it start?
I blame my hairy men obsession on Pa Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie (the book, not the TV show). Remember him? He had a big, bushy beard. In fact, the first time I watched the television show with Michael Landon, I yelled “Oh no! Why doesn’t Pa have a beard?” Hee hee. That seriously peeved me off.
3. Does Marcus Anderson, your Lumberjack In Love, wear boxers or briefs?
He wears boxer briefs. There’s a fun scene in the book where Ami discovers this fine fact. :^)
4. What do you find sexy about flannel shirts?
Flannel is soft, warm, cuddly and snuggly. Just like a big hairy, muscular teddy bear of a lumberjack.
Lumberjack + Flannel Shirt = Heaven On Earth!
(If the flannel shirt is plaid, then it’s even better)
5. We make a lot of concoctions in the Spell Room and you are notorious for creating special libations. Did you bring a special little drinky poo for moi?
In honor of my LUMBERJACK IN LOVE book, here’s a recipe for JACK ME OFF (a cocktail). Hee hee!
JACK ME OFF
1 and ½ oz. Applejack brandy
½ oz. Midori melon liqueur
3 oz.7-Up or Sprite
Put brandy, melon liqueur and ice into a shaker and shake it up good, baby! Then strain into a glass and add the soda. You could serve it with small twigs as stirrers if you’d like. Enjoy!
Thanks so much, Liberty, for the fun interview!

Dog Days of Summer
I'm back! It's not that I've gone anywhere, but somehow, without intending to, I have neglected my poor Spell Room. With my return I am announcing a new contest. The lucky winner will be chosen randomly from the wonderful people who comment here.
That's right, all you have to do is leave a comment on this blog.
Today is August 12th. We are well into the Dog Days of Summer. Did you ever wonder where that phrase came from. I always thought it meant days that were so hot even the dogs flopped down in any shady spot they could find to try to cool down. But, shock of all shockers, I was wrong. (It does happen every decade or so.)
The phrase originated with the Greeks. Sirius, the "Dog Star", from the constellation Canis Major, rose at about the same time as the sun, during the summer. (It doesn't anymore.) And sat near the sun.
The Roman's sacrificed a brown dog to appease the Gods when Sirius met with the sun. They believed Sirius was the cause of the hot, humid weather.
In those days dogs were considered evil, much like cats were during the Dark Ages.
Ancient Rome called the days between July 23 and August 24, the Dog Days. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac the Dog Days lasted for forty days, from July 3 through August 11.
So, according to T.O.F.A. the Dog Days of 2012 ended yesterday.
What are your favorite activities for the Dog Days of Summer?
Leave me a comment and you will be entered to win a Barnes and Noble gift certificate.
